Inspired by a recent viewing of several of Laika's films, I spent part of a weekend modeling Norman Babcock. Norman is a polygonal mesh, with just over 40,000 faces. The majority of those faces went into his sneakers, pants, and the zippers on his hoody and backpack. The hair is nHair. After generating and placing just over 200 splines, I was able to approximate the hair style used on the stop-motion puppet. The character is fully UV'd and I intend to do a little work in Photoshop or Mudbox, adding more details to the face and possibly the clothing. Existing details are modeled. The latest additions include Norman's backpack and modifications to the hood to accommodate the new obstruction. The model is a composite of concept sketches and the puppet used in the film, minus the asymmetrical stylization.
